Chapter 4
Capacitor Removal

It is necessary to remove the electrolytic capacitors from the P.C. Board, and replace them with other capacitors. Even though C102B and C102E were not improperly installed, I chose to replace them at the same time as the other three capacitors, as a precaution. To remove the electrolytic capacitors, take a pair of small needle-nosed pliers and give the round body of each capacitor a half-twist which will easily break them loose from the board. What remains will be a bottom plastic piece, and the two leads of the now removed surface mount capacitor. This bottom plastic piece can be removed by gently prying up on it with a small flat-bladed screwdriver. It is made of a very brittle plastic and will break in half, allowing you to remove it. You will now be able to access the two legs of the capacitor that are soldered to the surface mount pads. With a low-heat soldering iron, carefully heat up each of the pads and remove the capacitor leads. Be careful not to apply too much heat to the pads while doing this. Do not lose these lead-stubs. If they fall into the computer, they could potentially wreak havoc by shorting some circuitry, causing other problems.

Solder-Wick has been provided for those that know how to use it. I recommend using the Solder-Wick to remoce any excess solder from the surface mount pads. If you have not used Solder-Wick very much, however, now is not the time to practice. It is possible to do more damage if one is not experienced in the proper ways to use wick.
